The Calloway County Public Library is pleased to join the Jackson Purchase Historical Society to host Alex Waldrop's "How the Kentucky Derby Became a Quintessential American Event Steeped in Kentucky Lore" at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 27 at the Calloway County Public Library.

Join us as we delve into the world of horse racing with the renowned Alex Waldrop. This free presentation, centered around the history, tradition, and unique spectacle of the Kentucky Derby, promises to enlighten you on the many reasons why the "Run for the Roses" has grown into America's most prestigious annual horse racing event. As Forbes Magazine has described it, this is one of the "Greatest Bucket-list Sporting Events" in America.

Cabaret takes place from 1929-1930, a time when Berlin, in the midst of a post-World War I economic depression, is transitioning from a center of underground, avant-garde cultural epicenter to the beginnings of Hitler's totalitarian regime and the rise of the Nazi Party. Into this world enters Clifford Bradshaw, a struggling American writer looking for inspiration for his next novel. On his first night in Berlin, Cliff wanders into the Kit Kat Klub, a seedy nightclub overseen by the strange, omniscient and gender-bending Master of Ceremonies, "the Emcee." Here, Cliff meets Sally Bowles, a vivacious, talented cabaret performer, and an utterly lost soul. Sally and Cliff begin a relationship, which blossoms unexpectedly into a dream-like romance. As time passes, however, the situation in Berlin changes from exciting and vital to ominous and violent; Ernst, Cliff's first German friend, turns out to be an up-and-coming member of the Nazi Party, and Herr Schultz, a fellow boarder at Fraulein Schneider's guest house (and Schneider's fiancee), is the victim of an Anti-Semitic hate crime. When he finds out that Sally is pregnant, Cliff decides that they must leave for America at once, before things get any worse. Sally, afraid, confused, and unsure that she'll ever really be able to trade the sexy, illicit cabaret lifestyle for motherhood, gets an abortion, and tells Cliff that he must leave without her. With a distinctly Brechtian dose of provocation and a score featuring songs that have become classics of the American Musical Theater, Cabaret is a fierce, meaty musical that pushes the boundaries of the form and literally holds "the mirror up to nature."

The Fighting Back Against Parkinson's 5K & 1 mile Fun Run is a fundraiser to support Rock Steady Boxing 270 (formerly Rock Steady Boxing Murray). Rock Steady Boxing is a non-contact boxing program for people with Parkinson's Disease that helps improve their quality of life. RSB270 is a place where people can come together and fight back against Parkinson's. This event was started in 2020 by Christin Broadwater to honor her father, LC Cooley and those like him who have fought or continue to fight Parkinson's Disease.

We are pleased to announce the Towing for Toys 5th Annual 18 Holes Till Christmas Charity Golf Tournament. Towing for Toys is committed to seeing that every child in our community has the chance to enjoy a Merry Christmas by providing toys and other wish list items. By participating or sponsoring our events you enable Towing for Toys, Inc to fulfill the wishes of over 1400 school age children. Since 2013, your generosity has giving us the ability to purchase over $600,000 in toys, clothing and other items needed for children in Murray and Calloway County. Please help and join us by sponsoring our golf tournament this year. If you're not a golfer or can't attend our event we welcome you to donate to our great charity. If you have prizes, auction items, gift certificates or other items we would gladly appreciate those. This years tournament will feature 2 flights with the first starting at 7:30 am and the second at 1 pm. We will have lunch available beginning at 11:00 at the outside pavilion at the course, putting contest will begin at noon with the $100,000 shootout at the conclusion of the putting contest.

The hot social event of the summer!! The Farmers Market is open from 7 am to noon, on the downtown court square in Murray, every Saturday from May 11 through October 26. The Downtown Farmers Market exists to provide a location for farmers and crafters to promote their products directly to the consumers at a reasonable price, save family farms and stimulate the local economy. On average, 40 vendors (crafters, produce, baked goods, etc.) are set up every weekend. During peak season (June-July), more than 60 vendors will arrive. If you are in town on Saturday mornings, be sure to visit the downtown area to shop, socialize or just walk around the square. It will become your favorite morning tradition!
